Winter Wonderland ... Canaan Valley on Cobalt

The majestic Canaan Valley is one of West Virginia's best-know sites, and visitors and residents alike enjoy it during all four seasons. Fenton decoration designer Robin Spindler has portrayed winter in the Caaan Valley to perfection.

Robin developed this decorating technique relatively recently, so we asked her to explain it to us.

"The cobalt blue glass represents both the sky and the creek," she said. "The snow-covered hills are painted first, and their bases form the creek. We use a rubber "wipe out" tool with a blunt tip to create the trunks of the smaller trees in the background, and a similar tool forms the places for large trees in the foreground. A dry brush technique makes the look of bark on those larger tress. Finely-crushed glass is sprinkled on the wet paint to create the sparkle of snow and ice wherever we want it."

Each Canaan Valley item is out offering has a bright red Cardinal, our state bird, worked into the design. You'll find him along the ground, ever alert and foraging for seeds in the winter wonderland that is West Virginia's Canaan Valley.
